Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee Inaugurated the Dhandhanyo Auditorium in South Kolkata on Thursday. The state-of-the-art indoor facility, designed in the shape of a conch shell, was built at a cost of Rs 440 crore. Calling it a “symbol of progress and development”, he thanked the Public Works Department (PWD) for making this “dream project a reality”.

It consists of three auditoriums, one of which has a seating capacity of 2,000 people while the others are smaller in size. The building has a facility where artists can perform street plays. Hostel is also available in Naveen Dhandanya Auditorium.

Addressing the gathering at the opening ceremony, Banerjee said, “I thought of and created this conch shell design because the conch shell is ‘mangal’ (auspicious) for us. We have brought light from Ireland and zinc from France. Workers to make it have worked hard and I would request the Chief Secretary to felicitate all the workers and engineers in this hall one day.”

Referring to various developmental projects, he said, “I will not take anyone’s job. I will not suddenly build the Taj Mahal. I don’t have the ability to change history. History is history.”

Meanwhile, singer Ajoy Chakraborty, who performed at the newly inaugurated auditorium, said, “I have performed at various venues all over the world, but I must say this is the best internationally.”
