Bengal Police Arrest TMC Leader in Sandeshkhali, Lodge FIR Against Shajahan | Kolkata News – Times of India

KOLKATA: The West Bengal Police has arrested Ajit Maiti, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, in the Sandeshkhali area of North 24 Parganas district.
Maiti, who is known to be a close associate of the absconding TMC strongman Shahjahan Sheikh, was arrested after complaints were received regarding land grabbing from villagers.
He had sought refuge in the residence of a civic volunteer for over four hours after being chased by angry villagers.The police plan to present him in court later today.
Shahjahan Sheikh, against whom more than 70 complaints have been filed, has been accused of forcibly acquiring land and mistreating local women.
The arrest of Maiti follows an attack on him by villagers due to his alleged association with Shahjahan and his group.
The police’s actions are a response to the ongoing protests in Sandeshkhali, where villagers have been demonstrating against the alleged atrocities committed by local leaders of the ruling TMC party.
The Sandeshkhali area, located on the border of the Sunderbans and approximately 100 kilometers from Kolkata, has been in a state of unrest for over a month.
