He was talking to media persons after visiting the flood-affected areas and relief camps in Bhadrachalam, where the Godavari was flowing nearly ten feet above the danger mark on July 17.

He said that each flood-affected family would be given interim relief of Rs 10,000 and 20 kg rice to tide over the hardships.

Referring to some weather forecasts, he said the danger still persists as there is a possibility of heavy rains in the upper reaches of the river till the end of the month. Stating that there is no room for complacency, he underlined the need to maintain a high level of alertness and keep more than 20,000 flood-affected people in relief camps till the threat subsides completely.

“It is inevitable to relocate people living in flood prone areas in and around the temple town and a new residential colony will be constructed at a suitable location for this purpose. During my interaction with residents of Subhash Nagar Colony and other flood prone areas, the flood-affected people expressed their desire to come out of the low-lying areas,” Mr. Rao said.

The state government, in collaboration with the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), will implement a ₹1,000 crore package to provide a permanent solution to the recurring problem of floods in some areas of Bhadrachalam and Bergampadu mandal of Pinapaka constituency, he announced.

He said that services of IIT professors with vast experience would also be taken in this regard.

Referring to the unprecedented rainfall in the Godavari river valley in the last one week, he said that the Kadam project in Nirmal district had received an unusually 5 lakh cusecs of water three days back. It is only divine intervention that saved Kadam Dam, he remarked.

Some unconfirmed reports are doing the rounds about conspiracies by some foreign countries behind the unusual and unprecedented rainfall in the Godavari basin, as were reported in Ladakh and Uttarakhand in the past, Mr. Rao pointed out.

He said that he would soon lay the foundation stone of the new housing colony and prepare an action plan to develop the famous pilgrimage center of Bhadrachalam once the situation returns to normal.

He appreciated the District Administration, Police, NDRF and Army personnel for their tireless efforts in the flood affected areas and said that due to their dedicated efforts, no casualty has been reported in the current flood devastation.
