The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has clarified that the allegation that Rs 500 notes worth Rs 87,032 crore went missing from its system is false. Issuing a press release late on Saturday, the RBI said that some media reports have alleged the disappearance of published bank notes from bank note printing presses, but these reports were collected from the printing presses under the Right to Information Act, 2005. based on misinterpretation of the information provided. Proper accounting is maintained of all bank notes sent to RBI from the printing presses.

In fact, RTI activist Manoranjan Roy had filed an RTI, in response to which the three mints had given figures, on the basis of which it was said that all the three mints had supplied 8810.65 crore notes of Rs 500 to the Reserve Bank. At the same time, the Reserve Bank says that it got only 7260 crore notes.

As soon as this news came to the fore, these questions started arising as to how a large number of notes went missing despite such a secure system.
