Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to launch a campaign to identify areas where non-availability of land is depriving eligible slum dwellers from getting their land rights certificates. take care of the mission,
The task of identifying such slums has been entrusted to the Slum Basti Additional Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation. The chairman of the committee said, “We surveyed the slums using drones and found that there are many areas where the land problem persists.” Mahamaya Swain Said.
He said that a list of slums where land is not available would be prepared and submitted to the government for further action. “The committee will also take steps to identify those slum dwellers who have been denied land title certificates because of this problem,” Swain said.
As per the plan, local corporators will be tasked with identifying slum dwellers eligible for land rights certificates. The BMC is also planning to provide houses to slum dwellers in the ongoing affordable housing projects in the city.
“We will find out the number of such slum dwellers. Such slum dwellers will be provided houses in various affordable housing projects in the city, if they are eligible and not getting land rights certificates due to land problem in slums,” a said a senior BMC official.
According to BMC records, there are around 436 slums in the city with a total population of over 3 lakh. Administration is taking steps to formalize these slums through various schemes Rajeev Housing Scheme and Jaga Mission, among others.
“We would be more than happy with proper housing units but the administration needs to ensure that only eligible people are getting the benefits,” Pratap Sahupresident of Basti Surakhya Manch, said.
