Biden imposes 500 new sanctions on Russia: White House | World News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The US on Friday announced that it will be slapping 500 more sanctions against Russia for its ongoing war in Ukraine, which is about to enter its 3rd year, and the recent death of Putin critic Alexei Navalny.
In a statement, President Biden declared that the United States will impose fresh export restrictions on nearly 100 entities for aiding Russia and will implement measures to further diminish Russia’s energy revenues.
Biden emphasized that the measures aim to hold Russia accountable for the conflict and the demise of opposition figure Alexei Navalny. Despite facing severe shortages of ammunition and prolonged delays in Congress for US military aid, Washington remains committed to supporting Ukraine.
“They will ensure Putin pays an even steeper price for his aggression abroad and repression at home,” Biden said of the sanctions.
The measures announced on Friday will focus on individuals linked to Navalny’s incarceration, along with targeting Russia’s financial sector, defense industry, procurement networks, and sanctions violators across various continents, Biden said.
These sanctions represent the most recent addition to the thousands of targets identified by the United States and its allies since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The invasion has resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of lives and the devastation of cities.
“Two years into this war, the people of Ukraine continue to fight with tremendous courage. But they are running out of ammunition. Ukraine needs more supplies from the United States to hold the line against Russia’s relentless attacks, which are enabled by arms and ammunition from Iran and North Korea,” Biden said.
“That’s why the House of Representatives must pass the bipartisan national security supplemental bill, before it’s too late.”
