Bidi tycoon’s med college gets state nod, to offer 150 seats | Kolkata News – Times of India

KOLKATA: Bengal is set to get 150 more MBBS seats with West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) issuing a provisional affiliation certificate to Jakir HossainMedical College and Research Institute (JHMCRI), named after bidi tycoon and Jangipur’s Trinamool MLA Jakir Hossain. Pointing out that he had already applied to the National Medical Commission for an inspection, Hossain, also a former state minister, said he was optimistic to get an NMC clearance soon enough to be able to launch the MBBS course from 2024.
“On the basis of the report of the local inquiry committee, WBUHS has agreed in principle to affiliate the proposed course of MBBS with an annual intake capacity of 150 seats to be set up at Raghunathganj by JHMCRI, subject to grant of permission by National Medical Commission. This consent of affiliation shall be valid for three academic years,” stated the WBUHS registrar in the provisional affiliation certificate that was issued on Saturday.
If the medical college at Raghunathganj in Murshidabad gets the NMC clearance in time-the inspection is held to check the infrastructure and faculty-it will be the 35th medical institute in Bengal that will admit medical students from the coming academic year. The 34 functioning medical colleges, which offer 5,025 seats, 11 are private ones. In addition, AIIMS Kalyani offers 50 seats.
Hossain, who calls himself as “a son of a farmer”, said he now wanted to be associated with the education sector. He said he made his foray into the sector following in the footsteps of his brother and now owned four BEd and four DEd colleges, apart from a pharmacy college and a polytechnic institute, besides half-a-dozen schools.
Hossian said the new medical college, the construction of which was over, was being set up on a public-private partnership model, one of the first of its kind in Bengal. He added the medical college would use the infrastructure of the Jangipur Hospital against a fee, according to government norms, and the seats were likely to be shared with the state on a 50:50 basis. “The main objective of setting up this medical college and hospital is to provide treatment to the people of Jangipur and adjoining areas of Murshidabad. I am a social worker. I try to serve the people and follow the diktats of my party high command, Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee,” he said.
The 11 private medical colleges in Bengal are IQ City Medical College, Bishnupur Public Institute of Medical Science, Gouri Devi Institute of Medical Sciences & Hospital, ICare Haldia, JMN Medical College, Jagannath Gupta Institute, Budge Budge, KPC Medical College, Santiniketan Medical College, Shri Ramakrishna Institute of Medical Sciences, MR Institute and East West Institute.
