According to the World Wildlife Fund, the fishing cat is listed as endangered

Bagaha: Forest officials have recovered the carcass of a fishing cat in the forest Tirhut Main canal on Friday in Narwal-Boraval Panchayat under Bagaha-2 block of West Champaran. When he went to the canal to graze his cattle, a villager saw the dead body.

Valmiki Tiger Reserve Forest Director-cum-Conservator, Unknowinglytold this newspaper that fishing cats are not usually found in tiger reserves and are sometimes seen in nearby forests and water bodies in villages.
“The fishing cat population is largely confined to wetlands and floodplains. It is a skilled swimmer and frequently enters water to hunt fish,” he said.
