‘Biological fraud’: 2 women not paid for their ova, approach helpline | Ahmedabad News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: In an unusual complaint, two young women have alleged to have become victims of a ‘biological fraud‘ wherein an agent convinced them to sell their ovarian eggs but were not paid the promised amount of Rs 20,000.
Two women – Seema, 20, and Reena, 21 (names changed) – natives of Sabarkantha and employed with a city-based hospital as support staff alleged in a complaint with 181 Abhayam women helpline that in a bid to earn quick cash, they had agreed to sell their ova to an agent.
After their eggs were extracted at a Chhattisgarh facility twice, the agent did not pay them and siphoned off their money, the women alleged.
While the helpline managed to get them one instalment of the agreed amount, the women have submitted an application of complaint to Sola police station through the helpline for further probe. Abhayam officials said that police is set to probe further and look into a larger racket as the women were taken to Chhattisgarh for the extraction of ova.
Ova were extracted in Chhattisgarh
According to Abhayam 181 women helpline, Seema and Reena came in contact with a woman about two months ago through a social media site. Both of them were in search of ways to make quick money as they were earning Rs 15,000 each and conceded that the money was not enough to cover expenses of living in the city.
“The woman told them that they would be paid Rs 20,000 each for a simple medical procedure of extracting their ova for medical research. For the duo, it was a big amount and they agreed without any paperwork. The duo took injections and were then taken to a facility in Chhattisgarh where their ova were extracted,” said Falguni Patel, coordinator for Abhayam in Ahmedabad.
After the procedure, the woman did not pay them the promised amount. She claimed that she herself was awaiting payment from the client. After about a month, she again approached them saying their ova had matched the client’s requirement and they could again sell it. She promised that the duo will get the total amount of Rs 40,000 each at the end of the procedure.
“Afterwards, the woman agent switched off her phone. Realizing that they have been duped, they approached the helpline. The duo told us that the agent who was in contact with them at Chhattisgarh told them that their money was paid to the woman agent and refused to intervene. The woman agent’s boyfriend also got involved in the matter as he allegedly threatened the duo of dire consequences if they dragged the matter further,” said an Abhayam counsellor.
The helpline officials took the women to Sola police station after which the woman agent appeared before police. The helpline officials said that after the procedure of a complaint, the woman agent paid Rs 20,000 each to Seema and Reena. However, as full payment is not made.
