Alleging that the CPI(M) and Congress had tried to create trouble on polling day, Saha claimed that BJP leaders and workers, however, “showed patience and handled the situation calmly”.

A day after the polling process ended, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha reiterated on Friday that the BJP would be able to return to power in the state without forming any new alliance.

The party has tied up with the regional outfit Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) for the elections.

Addressing a press conference, Saha expressed confidence that the BJP would do better than the previous elections.

Amid speculation that Tipra Motha could emerge as the kingmaker if no party gets an absolute majority, Saha said it was unlikely.

The BJP alone will get an absolute majority in the 60-member assembly. I am sure the party will win more seats this time. The party will not need help from Tipra Motha.”

In the 2018 assembly elections, the saffron party had won 36 seats, while its allies IPFT got eight seats and CPI(M) 16 seats. The Congress had failed to open its account.

Asked about the prospects of IPFT, he said, “We have left five seats for them.” It is for them to tell how many seats they are expecting to win in this election.” He asserted that for the first time, violence and malpractice-free elections were held in Tripura.

“People were seen exercising their democratic rights without any hindrance,” he said.

Alleging that the CPI(M) and Congress had tried to create trouble on polling day, Saha claimed that BJP leaders and workers, however, “showed patience and handled the situation calmly”.

When asked about the allegation of irregularities by Hemani Debbarma, the party’s candidate from Golaghati constituency, Saha said, “Let the matter be investigated first.” If the claim is genuine, a recount may be sought. When asked if he would be the next chief minister, the doctor-turned-politician replied, “The future will decide… no one knows the future.” An average voter turnout of 87.63 per cent was recorded in the elections held on Thursday.
