DMK MP Kanimozhi told News18, “It is definitely good news” that opposition parties are coming together on several issues, including the opening of the new parliament. ‘This is something many people have been waiting for’

As politics heats up over the inauguration of the new Parliament House by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28, several parties have decided to boycott the event, including the MK Stalin-led DMK. The Tamil Nadu party has cited that the Center has not followed decorum in this regard, for which it is boycotting the event.

Senior DMK leader and MP K Kanimozhi told News18 exclusively: “We have decided to boycott the inauguration as the event is sidelining the President of India. The importance that should be given to the President is not given. In many things today there is no decorum which they (the central government) should follow. In protest, the opposition parties have decided to boycott the inauguration.”

Kanimozhi further said that the protest is against the central government’s move to center everything around one person.

“The decision to boycott is not a move by the opposition parties keeping in mind the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. We have to protest. Everything cannot be centered around one person or one party. There are things beyond party politics. The central government has to understand this.

The DMK has always called for “unity” of opposition parties and urged regional leaders to drop the idea of a Third Front. Kanimozhi echoed the party’s stand. Inauguration of the new Parliament. This is something a lot of people have been waiting for,” she said.

With the DMK taking advantage of every opportunity to put forward a “united opposition”, only time will tell whether the opposition parties will come together to fight the BJP in 2024.
