Porvorim: After the opposition criticized the state government budget for day care centers For senior Under its scheme ‘Umeed’ to the citizens, the government assured that it would increase the allocation during the supplementary budget.
Social Welfare Minister Subhash Faldesai said that the government will inspect the centers to check their functioning. He said that entertainment facilities including yoga classes would also be started at these centres.
Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai accused the central government of reducing the budgetary provision for running the center from Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 55 lakh. He said the government has not made any allocation for palliative care. “This government is neglecting senior citizens,” Sardesai said.
Responding to this question, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the budgetary provision was reduced due to non-utilisation of funds but it will be increased in supplementary demands.
Reading out paragraph 5 of the scheme, Sardesai said that the government provides financial assistance to local self-help groups (SHGs) to run day-care centers and questioned the government as to how many local bodies approach the government to start senior Huh. Sawant said that the new Panchs and Councilors are trained about the Citizen Charter of all the departments and it is their duty to approach the government to avail the benefits of the schemes.
“If all the local bodies approach the government then how will the government allow them to start when the budget provision is less,” Sardesai said.
As of 2001 India census, Goa has 10% senior citizens and this increased to 11.4% as per 2011 census.
Faldesai said 49 senior citizen centers are running in the state and this number has come down during the pandemic. “At present 10 centers are running and every village should start such centres,” he said.
