Cabinet approves draft Data Protection Bill, likely to be introduced in monsoon session – Times of India

The Union Cabinet has approved its draft digital personal data security (DPDP) Bill 2023 and it will be introduced in the upcoming monsoon session A parliamentary report said. Among other things, the Bill proposes to impose a penalty of up to Rs 250 crore on entities for each case of violation of the norms.

The Digital Data Protection (DPDP) Bill is likely to include almost all the provisions of the final draft which was released for consultation by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity). The Bill was released for public consultation in November 2022 and has undergone minor changes after consultation with stakeholders. Last year the Center had withdrawn the personal data protection billAfter a joint parliamentary committee proposed 81 amendments to it in 2021.
The DPDP Bill introduces the concept of data fiduciary, which is defined as a person who, either singly or jointly with other persons, determines the purposes and means of processing personal data.

Reportedly, individuals will also have the right to seek details regarding their data collection, storage and processing.
While releasing the bill for consultation, the government said, “The Act aims to provide for the processing of digital personal data in a manner that recognizes both the right of individuals to protect their personal data and the need for processing.” Personal data for lawful purposes.
