The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday gave conditional permission to ban the BJP. A public meeting at Uluberia in Howrah district Trinamool Congress is going to hold a Martyrs’ Day rally in Kolkata on Thursday. Despite the permission, the BJP canceled the program.

Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya said the meeting could be held from 8 pm to 10 pm at Uluberia, where only local people could participate. The court directed that no provocative statement would be made in the rally and the BJP leaders should ensure that law and order is followed. The court had said that holding a public meeting is a democratic right and the court cannot curtail it.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said the conditions were difficult to fulfill and the court had refused to allow the rally in a way by imposing restrictions. The state BJP leadership had approached the court after the administration denied permission to hold the rally on Thursday. On Tuesday, the court had asked why the BJP was insisting on holding a rally on July 21 and not on any other day.

Rally against authoritarian rule at the Centre: Mamata

Elaborate arrangements were made by the Trinamool Congress for the mega rally earlier in the day. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the venue at Esplanade and took stock of the preparations. The rally is against totalitarian rule at the Centre, Ms Banerjee said, urging supporters to maintain discipline at the rally. “I apologize to the people because there will be a traffic jam tomorrow,” she said.

A large crowd is expected to gather at the Esplanade on Thursday to celebrate Martyrs’ Day in memory of the 13 activists killed in police firing on July 21, 1993, during the Left Front regime. Martyrs’ Day rally is taking place physically after two years. In 2020 and 2021, the Trinamool president had to virtually address party supporters due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with the Chief Minister, Trinamool General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee also visited many places where party supporters had already reached.

Mr. Banerjee said that if the rally is held in the Brigade Parade Ground, more people can sit in it. Lakhs of Trinamool supporters have already reached the city for Thursday’s event, which is likely to be a big show of strength.
