Cancer screening camp organized for Secretariat employees ahead of World Cancer Day

On the occasion of World Cancer Day on Saturday, a cancer screening camp was organized for the employees in the Secretariat on Friday.

Members of the Tamil Nadu State Chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India and the Chennai South Chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) organized the camp, in which over 620 persons were screened, said M. Kanagavel, secretary, IMA, Chennai South.

The camp included basic tests such as BMI, fat analysis and bone density to help stratify those at high risk for cancer. Those who appeared anemic were screened, and women over the age of 50 were given the option of a PAP smear.

Overweight individuals were screened for diabetes and high blood pressure, while those with multiple risk factors such as diabetes and high blood pressure were screened because they were considered to be at risk, Dr. Kangavel said.

According to him 7-8% of people with risk factors were identified. While nine individuals were diagnosed as diabetic, some were also found to have gallstones.

Around 20 doctors participated in the camp which was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Health Secretary and President of Tamil Nadu Secretariat Employees Union. IMA President Senthimeez Pari and IMA Chennai South President Y Vedakumari were present on the occasion.

Prime Indian Hospital and Girishwari Hospital provided equipment for the test.

Painting competition on the occasion of World Cancer Day

Vasantha Memorial Trust will organize a painting competition to mark the World Cancer Day at Harkishan Block, Gurunanak College, Velachery on Sunday.
