Chelyadka Bridge To Be Replaced With New One | Mangaluru News – Times of India

Mangaluru: The Chelyadka bridge, a structure constructed during the British-era on the Puttur-Bettampady road, gets submerged every monsoon, causing inconvenience to the public as well as motorists. With the government sanctioning Rs 3 crore, the old bridge will be replaced with a new one soon, to put an end to the woes of the public.
According to history, Chelyadka bridge is almost 100 years old, and for several decades, there has been a persistent demand from residents to construct another bridge that will free them from the inundation during monsoon, which would turn some of the villages into islands.
Spokesperson for Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai told TOI that recently the MLA had visited the spot, after which it was decided to construct a bridge on priority. “All these years, the funds could not be sanctioned because the road was not upgraded. The road came under the PWD recently. The government has sanctioned Rs 3 crore, and work will commence at the earliest,” the spokesperson shared.
The bridge, which is about 6ft above the water level, is infamously known as the ‘Mulugu Sethuve’ or submerged bridge.
“The reason for this name is that during the monsoon, it gets submerged 10 times on average. It becomes frustrating for all those who use this bridge to reach several important places in the district, and we have been protesting for several years regarding this issue. We are now happy that our plea is heard, and Chelyadka will have a new bridge soon,” expressed Krishnaprasad Alva, president of Sri Vishnu Yuvaka Mandala. “We had organised several protests. At times, the bridge used to get submerged for more than 24 hours, causing major inconvenience to nearby villagers. Besides, the century-old bridge without any guardrail, is also dilapidated. There were several incidents of people being washed away in the waters. As the river swells and water starts to flow on the bridge, the movement of vehicles gets suspended. Private buses and other vehicles that ply on the stretch use alternative roads when this happens,” he added.
