Chennai police remove protesting teachers from DPI campus – Times of India

CHENNAI: The Chennai city police on Thursday removed more than 5,000 people from the Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) campus where they had been staging a protest for 10 days. The protesters, including teachers and their families, were detained in seven marriage halls.
The teachers were agitating in three groups. Their demands included equal pay for equal work and making temporary teachers permanent.
The members of the Secondary Grade Seniority Teachers’ Association (SSTA) demanded that there should be no disparity in their salary structure and all the teachers appointed before and after May 31, 2009, should receive the same pay. Sources said the teachers are getting paid Rs 3,170 less than those appointed after 2009 and at least 20,000 teachers are affected due to the pay anomaly.
Around 10,359 people are working as part-time teachers. School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has promised to increase the consolidated salary to Rs 12,500 apart from issuing a medical insurance coverage for Rs 10 lakh per year.
