Chennai to get 50 new parks, 15 playgrounds | Chennai News – Times of India

Chennai: The city is all set to get more green lungs. The Greater Chennai Corporation plans to add 50 parks and 15 playfields under Singara Chennai 2.0.
According to officials, these parks will have green space, landscaped gardens, medicinal plants, rain water harvesting structures and sports and gym equipment apart from all the facilities of other parks. The city currently has 786 parks.
proposals have been sent to Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation which will study and approve it. Tenders will be issued as soon as approval is received.
Last year, the corporation started the work of building 150 new parks and completed 37. Work on the rest is in progress. V Bhuvaneshwaran, Chief Engineer (Parks) said that most of them are in various stages of construction. “They will be ready for use in about two months,” he said.
Along with building new parks, the corporation will also renovate the old parks, where the sports equipment has deteriorated and there is lack of facilities. Bhuvaneswaran said, “We have asked zonal officers to send those proposals which will also be considered in the zone.”
The corporation had renovated 28 parks with Rs 25 crore in 2021-22 and 84 parks with Rs 29 crore in 2022-23. Around 57 parks are being converted into sponge parks with interventions like tree plantation, small tanks and rain water harvesting structures. In these two years, 68 sports grounds were renovated at a cost of Rs 28 crore.

“The construction and renovation of new parks and playgrounds is as per the minister’s announcement. We are working on the detailed project report. There are plans to increase open spaces and green spaces,” she said.
Activists and residents want the civic body to focus on the maintenance of the park as the maintenance contracts have expired in March.

R Senthil, Resident KK Nagar, said that many parks lacked clean toilets and sprinklers. “Establishment of new parks is a welcome step. But existing parks should also be maintained well,” he added. Currently, 142 parks are maintained by the GCC, 57 by residents, corporates and NGOs, and 584 by private contractors. “We have called for tenders, which will be finalized soon.
