Chikkamagaluru: Congress returns after 34 years in Karnataka assembly elections. Mysore News – Times of India

The Congress made a spectacular comeback after a gap of 34 years by winning all the five constituencies in Chikkamagaluru district. In 1989, the Congress had won all five regions, but lost its stronghold to the BJP, which had gained traction following its Hindutva plank.
In 2018, the BJP had won four seats except Sringeri. Now the party has failed to win even a single seat in its stronghold. Even BJP national general secretary CT Ravi lost to Lingayat Congress candidate HD Thammaiah.
In 1989, all five Congress candidates, former minister Sagir Ahmed (Chikkamagaluru), former minister Mottamma (Mudigere), UK Shamanna (Sringeri), M Veerabhadrappa (Kadur) and HR Raju (Tarikere), won. Political analyst KR Chandrasekhar said, “Another constituency was Birur and it was represented by KS Mallikarjuna. But after the delimitation in 2008, the Birur segment was dropped.”
After 1989, the Congress’s strength weakened as the Janata Dal improved its base in the 1994 elections. Janata Dal party candidates were elected from Sringeri, Kadur, Mudigere and Birur regions. However, Chikkamagaluru was retained by the Congress and independent candidate SM Nagaraju made it to the assembly from Tarikere in the 1994 elections.
Chikkamagaluru has been a BJP bastion since 2004 and the party has strengthened its base in the name of Hindutva. While CT Ravi has been elected four times in a row from Chikkamagaluru since 2004, it was a hat-trick of wins from Sringeri from 2004 to 2013 for DN Jeevaraj, and MP Kumaraswamy, now with the JD(S), also elected three times from Mudigere They went. BJP’s ticket has been won by BJP candidates twice since 2004 in Kadur and Tarikere.
According to second-time Sringeri MLA TD Rajagouda, the BJP failed to deliver on its promises and did not focus on development activities.
