The local police bureau of Pingliang city reported that a story claiming nine construction workers died in the accident in a city in China’s northwestern Gansu received more than 15,000 clicks after it was published on social media on April 25.

China’s new regulations for deep fake bar service providers and users prohibit them from producing, releasing and fabricating untrue information using such technology.

The rules, which take effect on January 10, are designed to prevent the use of generative AI technology to alter online content.

A total of 25 Baijiahou accounts, a blog-style platform owned by China’s tech giant Baidu, reported the “accident” with IP addresses from different locations, according to the police statement.

It said the suspect, surnamed Hong, was identified and arrested for providing false information after police traced all the accounts and joined his company.

Local police said Hong allegedly edited ChatGPT-generated news and uploaded it to the Baidu-owned platform.
