China's top diplomat says it is 'impossible' to control the country

Wang praised Kissinger’s “historic contribution to the ice-breaking development of Sino-US relations”.

Beijing:

Beijing’s top diplomat Wang Yi told Henry Kissinger on Wednesday that it was impossible to contain or contain China, praising the former US secretary of state’s role in opening ties between Washington and Beijing.

Wang told 100-year-old Kissinger at a meeting in Beijing, “China’s development has a strong endogenous momentum and inevitable historical logic, and it is impossible to try to change China, and even more impossible to contain and control China. ” , according to a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs.

Appreciating China’s “established friendship with old friends”, Wang praised Kissinger’s “historic contribution to the ice-breaking development of Sino-US relations”.

“China’s policy towards the United States maintains a high degree of consistency, and adheres to the basic guidelines proposed by President Xi Jinping, which are mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation,” Wang said.

China’s top diplomat said, “These three guidelines are fundamental and long-term, and they are also the right way for the two big countries China and the United States to come to terms with each other.”

“US policy toward China requires Kissinger-style diplomatic acumen and Nixon-style political courage,” he said, referring to former US President Richard Nixon, who established diplomatic relations with Communist-run China.

Kissinger, then US National Security Advisor, secretly went to Beijing in July 1971 on a mission to establish relations with Communist China.

That trip set the stage for a historic visit by Nixon, who sought to end the Cold War and help end the Vietnam War.

Washington’s opening up to then-isolated Beijing helped China become a manufacturing superpower and the world’s largest economy after the United States.

Since leaving office, Kissinger has become wealthy by advising businesses on China – and he has warned against drastic changes in US policy.
