“Don’t play with my authority” Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud told a lawyer during a hearing on Tuesday as the advocates were pressing for early hearing of their case.

The CJI told the lawyer that the matter has been listed for hearing on April 17, when he insisted on the earliest date. The counsel further sought to mention the matter before another bench.

Responding to this the CJI asked the lawyer, “Your date is 17th, you want to mention it before some other bench to get the date of 14th?”

The counsel further informed the court that a similar matter was taken up by the court on Monday and some new matters were also mentioned.

To this the CJI said, “If it is listed for the 17th, it will come up on the 17th. Don’t play with my authority.”

CJI Chandrachud further told the counsel, “Don’t play this trick with me. You cannot mention it here for an earlier date and then elsewhere.”
