Coimbatore court extends police custody of BJP supporter Uma Gargi

The Fourth Judicial Magistrate Court in Coimbatore on Thursday extended the police custody of BJP supporter Uma Gargi, who was arrested by the cyber crime police on June 20. He was arrested for his social media posts, which according to the police were intended to provoke breach of the peace and promote hatred.

Gargi was produced before a magistrate on Thursday evening after the court granted police a day’s custody. The cybercrime police sought one more day’s custody of the accused, saying it was necessary for the investigation.

The court sent the accused to the custody of the cybercrime police till Friday evening.

Gargi was charged with offenses under sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 505(2) (statements causing or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) and section 67 (punishment) of the Indian Penal Code. was arrested for. for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) and section 66F of the Information Technology Act (punishment for cyber terrorism), based on a complaint lodged by an office-bearer of the DMK IT wing.
