Composite LPG Cylinders: Benefits, Transition, and Safety in Patna | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: Two years after the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) introduced the ‘Indane composite cylinders’ of liquified petroleum gas (LPG), consumers in the city have begun transitioning to these new cylinders.
Launched in September 2021, the cylinders provide a host of benefits for users. Made of a composite layer of polymer-wrapped fiber glass, the cylinders weigh only half as much as their steel counterparts making them easier to handle.
As they have a translucent body, consumers can accurately check the remaining LPG level against light. This can help them plan their next refill. Unlike the old cylinders, these cylinders are rust-free and do not corrode. This reduces the chances of leaving stains and marks on surfaces. The cylinders are also explosion-proof, making them safer to use.
The price of refilling the gas remains the same, Rs 721 for 10kg for the new cylinders compared with Rs 1,001 for 14kg for the old cylinder. However, the security deposit on the new cylinders is Rs 3,000 compared to Rs 2,200 for the old ones. Consumers can switch to the new cylinder by paying the difference in cost.
Prabhakar Mishra, who runs a gas agency in the city’s Kankarbagh locality, said at least 25% of his customers have already switched to the new cylinders. “Most people who buy new connections prefer the new cylinders over the old ones. We also prefer the new cylinders since they are much safer,” he said.
“Although more and more people are switching to the new models, the old ones still remain very popular. A major reason for this is that customers don’t want to shell out an additional Rs 800 for the security deposit. Many customers also prefer the old cylinders since they last longer leading to less frequent refilling. However, wealthier and more educated customers prefer the new model over the old one,” said Amitesh Gautam, a gas agency owner in Kurji.
