Conduct Study on Water Project Safety: Min to IIT-G | Guwahati News – Times of India

Guwahati: Within a month, two incidents of underground drinking water pipeline bursting have come to light in Guwahati. Assam urban affairs minister Ashoka Singhal on Tuesday asked IIT-Guwahati (IIT-G) to conduct a comprehensive study on the safety, design and cost analysis of the water project in the city.
He had an intense meeting with Professor Rajiv Kumar Bhattacharya from the civil engineering department of IIT-G on Tuesday.
He said, “During the meeting, I stressed on the need to bring scientific solutions to address the urgent issues so that such incidents do not happen. The study should look into aspects such as design integrity, safety factors, operation and maintenance protocols of pipeline infra in the city.
To expedite the resolution process, he urged Bhattacharya to start his work immediately and provide a preliminary report at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Secretary, Department of Housing and Urban Affairs, Pabitra Ram Khaund has been assigned by the minister to investigate the incident of bursting of underground drinking water pipe in Guwahati’s Rajgarh on Monday.
This was the second incident in a month. On May 25, another underground water pipeline of the South Central Guwahati Water Project burst in Kharghuli area, killing an elderly woman.
