New Delhi: Amidst the unrest in the ruling Shiv Sena In Maharashtra, the Congress on Tuesday deputed its senior leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath As AICC Supervisor in the State.
The decision came soon after reports that some Shiv Sena MLAs led by the disgruntled leader Eknath Shinde are camping in Gujarat and can pose a threat to the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.
“The Congress President has deputed Kamal Nath as All India Congress Committee (AICC) Observer with immediate effect in view of the recent political developments in the state,” an official communication from the Congress said.
In the MVA government in Maharashtra, the Congress shares power with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Shiv Sena.
Senior Shiv Sena leader and minister Shinde has gone incommunicado, a party leader said, a day after the MVA suffered a defeat on one of the six seats in the state legislative council elections.
The development may set the MVA on fire as some Shiv Sena MLAs are believed to be in touch with Shinde.
However, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut insisted that “Shiv Sena is a party of loyalists and like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, attempts by the BJP to topple the MVA government will not succeed”.
He also said that Shinde was a “trusted Shiv Sainik” and the “missing” MLA would come back once the party reached out to him.
Earlier in the day, a Shiv Sena leader said that Shinde, who wields influence in some satellite cities of Mumbai, may be in Gujarat with some MLAs. The leader did not reveal the number and details of the MLAs who could be with Shinde.
NCP leader Sharad Pawar said he is confident that the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray Will be able to handle the situation and the MVA government will complete its five-year term.
Pawar will meet Thackeray later in the day as he leaves for Mumbai soon after the opposition meeting on the joint presidential candidate.
