Belagavi: Congress has succeeded in making a dent in BJP’s fort by winning 11 out of 18 seats in Belagavi district. In the 2018 elections, the BJP and the Congress had won 10 and 8 seats, respectively. Interestingly, most veteran politicians, including KPCC working president Satish Jarkiholi, former deputy CM Laxman Savadi, former KPCC Mahila Morcha president Lakshmi Hebbalkar, who contested on a Congress ticket, and former minister Ramesh Jarkiholi, Shashikala Jolle and Balachandra Jarkiholi, who contested on a BJP ticket, emerged victorious in the assembly elections with a good margin.

Talking to reporters, Laxman Savadi, who won from Athani constituency, said he joined the Congress party after discussing with his supporters. He said that he hopes that those who have been with him for the last 25 years will hold his hand. “I thought I could win by a margin of 55,000 votes. Voters have blessed me more than expected. My victory was possible because of Congress and my supporters. Savadi further said that while joining the Congress, he did not put any condition in front of the leaders. “I only sought funds for the development of the constituency,” he said.
In Belagavi Rural constituency, former minister Ramesh Jarkiholi targeted MLA Lakshmi Hebbalkar. He fielded his follower Nagesh Manolkar and organized several public meetings in the constituency. Against all odds, Hebbalkar won with a margin of 55,551 votes.
Reacting to the media persons, Hebbalkar said, “My expectations have been fulfilled. The margin of victory has improved as compared to last time.
In Gokak constituency, Congress candidate Dr Mahantesh Kadadi gave a tough fight to Ramesh Jarkiholi but the latter won by a margin of 25,412 votes.
It was a smooth ride for Satish Jarkiholi in Yamkanmardi constituency. He defeated Basavaraj Hundri of BJP by 57,046 votes. Similarly, it was easy for BJP’s Balachandra Jarkiholi, who won by a margin of 70,568 votes against independent candidate Bhimappa Gadd in Arabhavi constituency. However, this was not the case for Sasikala Jolle in the Nipani constituency. It was a triangular fight in the constituency and Jolle won by a margin of 7,292 votes in the last two rounds against NCP candidate Uttam Patil. Congress candidate Kakasaheb Patil slipped to the third position.
Unexpectedly, Khanpur MLA Dr Anjali Nimbalkar faced irreparable defeat in Khanpur constituency against BJP candidate Vitthal Halgekar who won by a margin of 54,629 votes. In Chikodi-Sadalga constituency, Ganesh Hukkeri of INC got the highest number of 78,509 votes in the district. He defeated former MP Ramesh Katti.
Bailhongal, Kittur, Ramdurg, Raibag, Belagavi South, Savadatti and Belagavi North constituencies saw a tight fight till the last round of counting. In Raibag, BJP candidate Duryodhan Aihole won by a margin of just 2,570 votes against the independent candidate and former candidate. I a s Officer Shambhu Kalolikar. Similarly, in Bailhongal, Congress MLA Mahantesh Kaujlagi won against BJP candidate Jagdish Metgud with a margin of just 3,037 votes. In Belagavi North too, Congress candidate Asif Sait defeated BJP’s Dr. Ravi Patil by 7,749 votes.
Congress’s Ashok Pattan defeated BJP candidate Chikkarevanna by 11,414 votes in Ramdurg seat. Similarly, in Savadatti, Congress’s Vishwas Vaidya defeated BJP’s Ratna Mamani by a margin of 14,695 votes, where JD(S) candidate Saurabh Chopra, who managed to get 30,857 votes, slipped to the third position. In Belagavi South, BJP MLA Abhay Patil won against MES candidate Ramakant Konduskar by a margin of 12,308 votes.
