Congress condemns violence on Manipur CM, says he cannot absolve himself, ‘his patrons in New Delhi, Nagpur’

The Congress attack came a day after Singh, who heads the BJP-led government in Manipur, chaired an all-party meeting on the current situation in the violence-hit state.

The Congress on Sunday hit out at Chief Minister N Biren Singh over the situation in Manipur, saying he cannot absolve himself and his patrons in New Delhi and Nagpur of responsibility for the horrific violence and killings in the state.

The Congress attack came a day after Singh, who heads the BJP-led government in Manipur, chaired an all-party meeting on the current situation in the violence-hit state.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet, “Manipur CM finally refuses to meet all political parties and some civil society groups. But he absolves himself and New Delhi and Nagpur of responsibility for the horrific violence and killings in the state.” I cannot absolve my patrons.

“But now is the time for a collective resolve to bring peace and harmony to Manipur,” Ramesh said.

Violent clashes broke out in Manipur on Wednesday between tribals and people from the majority Meitei community, displacing thousands and killing at least 54.

The clashes broke out after a ‘tribal solidarity march’ was organized in 10 hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
