73.19% voting for the first time, 1% more than the last election
There has not been a repeat of power in the state for 38 years. The last time the Janata Party led by Ramakrishna Hegde won an election while in power was in 1985. At the same time, out of the last five elections (1999, 2004, 2008, 2013 and 2018), a single party got majority only twice (1999, 2013). BJP became the single largest party in 2004, 2008, 2018. He formed the government with external support.

On May 10, 5.13 crore voters cast their votes for 2,615 candidates for 224 seats. According to the Election Commission, 73.19% voter turnout has been recorded in Karnataka. This is the highest in the electoral history of the state after 1957.

BJP did not have majority in 2018… still formed government
In 2018, BJP had won 104 seats, Congress 78 and JDS 37. No party got majority. Yeddyurappa from BJP was sworn in as Chief Minister on 17 May, but resigned on 23 May due to not being able to prove his majority in the House. After this Congress-JDS coalition government was formed.

After 14 months, the politics of Karnataka again took a turn. Kumaraswamy had to leave the chair after the rebellion of some Congress and JDS MLAs. Yeddyurappa merged these rebels with the BJP and on 26 July 2019, with the support of 119 MLAs, he again became the chief minister, but resigned after two years. The BJP made Basavaraj Bommai the Chief Minister.

Now know the complete analysis of Congress’s victory
Congress has won 75 new seats in 2023 as compared to 2018. In 2018, these seats were with BJP, JD(S) or some other party. Of such new seats, the Congress wrested 52 seats from the BJP and 23 from the JD(S).

The vote share of BJP remained almost same as in 2018. While the JD(S) vote decreased by 5%, the Congress vote bank increased by 5%. Political experts believe that JD(S)’s Muslim voters shifted to Congress because of announcements like banning Bajrang Dal.

Karnataka is politically divided into 6 parts…

1. Bengaluru Karnataka: This is Bangalore and surrounding areas. Here BJP, Congress and JD(S) all the three parties have been winning. JD(S) has suffered the most in this area in the 2023 results. From here JD(S) has reduced 6 seats, while BJP has increased 5 seats.

2. Bombay Karnataka: This Lingayat-dominated area is considered a stronghold of the BJP. In the results of 2023, BJP has lost 14 seats here, while Congress has gained 16 seats.

3. Central Karnataka: In 2018, BJP won the maximum number of seats here, but in the 2023 elections, BJP lost the maximum number of 16 seats from here. Congress won twice as many seats as in 2018.

4. Coastal Karnataka: In this area too, the BJP has suffered losses and the Congress has reaped the benefits.

5. Hyderabad Karnataka The BJP’s seats in this area have come down from 12 to 8 and the Congress has increased from 15 to 20.

6. Old Mysuru: The Vokkaliga-dominated area has been a stronghold of the JD(S). The JD(S) suffered the most from here in the 2023 results. Its seats have reduced from 14 to just 2. Congress got the maximum benefit here. In this area, Rahul Gandhi did Bharat Jodo Yatra.

BJP changed candidates, but anti-incumbency remained
BJP fielded 72 new faces on 224 assembly seats. Along with 6 ministers-former ministers, tickets of 21 MLAs were cut. It also included the names of former CM and Deputy CM. All this was done to reduce anti-incumbency, but the results are showing that even after fielding so many new faces, the effect of anti-incumbency did not reduce.

The party also implemented the ticket formula for only one person from a family. This too was ineffective. According to senior journalist Samiullah Belagaru, only one or two people were listened to in ticket distribution in BJP. It included BL Santosh and Prahlad Joshi. Yeddyurappa was sidelined.

The Congress won 66% of the seats in the seven districts Rahul passed through in Karnataka.

Rahul’s Bharat Jodo Yatra lasted for 21 days in Karnataka, passed through 7 districts. There are 48 assembly seats in these districts. Congress has won 32 of these seats. That means a strike rate of 66%. This is more than double from 2018. In the 2018 assembly elections, the Congress was able to win 15 seats here. BJP had 17, JDS 14 and the remaining 2 seats were with others.

PM Modi campaigned in 19 districts, where BJP won 33% seats
