The Congress general secretary had made a pre-poll promise of giving Rs 2,000 per month to every woman in every household in Karnataka. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai took a jibe at her, saying that the women of the state were not ready to make her a ‘nayaki’ (leader).

Taking lessons from the Himachal Pradesh election playbook and buoyed by victory in the northern state, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made a pre-poll promise of giving Rs 2,000 per month to every woman in every household in Karnataka. With this, the Congress says that it will benefit more than 1.5 crore women in the state. The party had earlier promised 200 units of free electricity every month to every household in Karnataka.

Priyanka was launching the “Na Nayaki” (I am a leader) campaign for the Mahila Congress at the Bengaluru Palace grounds. The women centric announcements are called “Griha Lakshmi Yojana”.

“The amount will be deposited directly into the accounts of the women head of the household. This income for every woman will help them to overcome the burden of price hike and increase in LPG prices to run their household,” she told a large gathering of women.

Priyanka unveiled a check replica of Rs 2,000 per month in favor of the “female head of every household” in Karnataka on July 1, 2023.

Congress had started a similar scheme in Punjab as well, but it is yet to be implemented. Similar programs were promised by the Trinamool Congress during the Goa elections and also by the DMK in the 2021 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, but have not been fulfilled so far.

“In Himachal Pradesh, the Congress had promised Rs 1,500 per month to over 90 lakh women. After its victory in the state, a committee has been formed to implement it within a month,” said a party leader on condition of anonymity. We will ensure that it is distributed across Karnataka on July 1. Will go.”

When Sonia Gandhi contested from this seat in 1999, Priyanka got a big success in Ballari. The Congress has consistently pushed Priyanka as the face of the women’s plan in all poll-bound states. Her announcement is a teaser of a special manifesto for women for the Karnataka elections due before mid-May.

The Karnataka BJP on Monday termed the women-oriented scheme launched by Priyanka as a “fake promise”. It pointed out that this is a promise that cannot be implemented in other states. For example, Rs 2,500 monthly allowance for unemployed young women in Chhattisgarh, and Rs 3,500 monthly allowance for unemployed young women in Rajasthan, he said.

Just before she landed in the southern state, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai took a jibe at Priyanka, saying the women of the state were not ready to make her a “nayaki” (leader).

Bommai said, “One thing I don’t understand is the title of the show, Na Nayaki.” Bommai said.
