Congress MLA UT Khadar (53) will be the first Muslim leader to serve as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

Former Minister and five-time Congress MLA UT Khadar was on Wednesday unanimously elected as the new Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

Khadar (53) will be the first Muslim leader to serve as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah proposed Khader’s name for the post of Speaker and it was seconded by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

As there was no other claimant to the post, Speaker Pro Tem RV Deshpande put the resolution moved by the Chief Minister to vote, and it was unanimously accepted by the House.

By convention, the ruling party’s candidate is usually unanimously elected as the Speaker.

Khader had also served as Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the previous assembly and as a minister in the past.
