Contractor, Worker Die In Wall Collapse During Renovation | Mumbai News – Times of India

Mumbai: A labour contractor and a worker lost their lives when a wall of a flat in Bhayander (east) that had been undergoing renovation collapsed on them on Sunday. Another worker suffered head injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The owner of the flat, Vinaykumar Tripathi, has been charged by the Navghar police for causing deaths due to negligence.
The flat, situated in the five-storey Shreenath Jyoti Cooperative Housing Society in Navghar locality had been entrusted to labour contractor Hariram Chouhan (55) for renovation purpose. The flat was unoccupied and Chouhan, along with two workers — Makhanlal Yadav (26) and Aakash Yadav (24), had been carrying out the work for the past few days.
On Sunday, around 10.30 am, workers were in the kitchen and a wall near the water tank suddenly collapsed. Chouhan and Makhanlal were trapped beneath the debris, while Aakash, who was at a distance, sustained head injuries.
Residents of the building, upon hearing the crashing sound rushed to the site and alerted the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation fire brigade personnel. Chouhan and Makhanlal were extricated from the rubble and taken to a govt hospital where the two were pronounced ‘dead’.
Officials of the municipal corporation arrived at the scene and instructed the office-beaers of the housing society to conduct a a structural audit of the 24-year-old building. According to civic officials the building is not on the list of ‘dilapidated’ structures.
The police said that they are investigating whether the flat owner had obtained the necessary permissions from the society managing committee to carry out the renovation work.
