Cop Held For Helping Convict Escape Custody | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: The Kerala police on Thursday arrested a constable attached to the armed reserve police in the city for helping a life convict escape.
An official source identified the arrested person as Dhanasekaran, a grade-II police constable attached to the armed reserve in Coimbatore.
According to the source, Dhanasekaran, along with constables Praveen and Babin, was tasked with the job of escorting J Lenin, 37, a native of Mylambadi near Krishnagiri, to a court in Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad in Kerala on Tuesday for the trial of a gangrape of a minor girl.
“Lenin was undergoing life imprisonment for murdering the parents and grandmother of his former lover at Gudalur in the Nilgiris in 2014. He was serving his sentence at the Coimbatore Central Prison. He was an accused in the gangrape of a minor girl in the Ambalavayal police station limits in Wayanad in 2022. He was summoned to appear before the court for framing of charges against all the 17 accused in the case,” the source said.
The source said Lenin was taken to Sulthan Bathery in a bus. “He was escorted by the three cops. While taking him back to the city central prison after the court proceedings, Lenin managed to escape into a forest in the Meppadi police station limits in Wayanad.”
The Meppadi police registered a case against Lenin and arrested him from Kozhikode railway station on Wednesday, when he was planning to escape to Mangaluru in Karanataka.
“During questioning, Lenin said he had help from Dhanasekaran and four of his friends and family members to escape police custody. The Meppadi police subsequently altered the sections to 120(B), 222, and 225(B) of the Indian Penal Code and Dhanasekaran was included as the accused number two,” the source said.
The Meppadi police arrested Dhanasekaran, along with the remaining accused, and produced him before a judicial magistrate court at Kalpetta in Wayanad on Thursday morning. He was however let off on bail.
Meanwhile, the Coimbatore police have placed all the three cops deployed to escort Lenin under suspension.
