Chennai: The Tambaram police on Sunday issued summons to BJP‘s Tirunelveli Lok Sabha constituency candidate Nainar Nagendran and P Goverthanan, the state president of BJP’s industrial cell, to appear for inquiry next week.
This follows the seizure of ₹3.8 crore from three passengers and one of them said he worked in Nagendran’s hotel. Police sources said that no specific date was mentioned in the summons, and they will appear before the police next week.They are likely to be questioned about the source of the money and the purpose for which it was carried.
Last week, a flying squad, on a tip-off about the cash being carried in the two-tier AC coach of the Chennai-Tirunelveli Nellai Superfast Express, nabbed the trio -— Satish and S Naveen of Agaram in Chennai and S Perumal of Srivaikundam in Thoothukudi district.
During inquiries, Satish, also a BJP member, said that he was an employee of a hotel owned by Nainar Nagendran in Chennai and said the money was meant for distribution to voters in the Tirunelveli Lok Sabha constituency.
He also told police that their train tickets were released through the emergency quota after submitting a letter from Nainar Nagendran.
The seized cash was deposited in the treasury. The Income Tax officials were alerted about the incident. The state police also conducted searches in places linked to Nainar Nagendran in Chennai and Tirunelveli..
