Customs officials seized 405 kg of Ganja worth ₹81 lakh

Officials of the Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate, Vijayawada have seized approximately 405 kg of Ganja valued at approximately ₹81 lakh. They arrested six smugglers on Sunday and seized a car and a mini truck from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Customs officials intercepted the vehicles at Prasadampadu on the outskirts of Vijayawada and seized the banned substance found packed in gunny bags, officials said in a release on Monday.

“The accused were carrying the smuggled goods in the guise of onions. This was the second seizure of ganja in the state in the last week,” said an investigating officer as June 26 is the International Day against Drug Abuse.

The accused were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. He was produced before the 4th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Vijayawada, which remanded him to judicial custody.

Customs officials seized about 833 kg of ganja worth about ₹1.66 crore in the state in a week and arrested eight accused. Officials said efforts are on to trace the origin and destination of the smuggling operation.
