‘Deeply concerned’: PM Modi after Bolsonaro supporters attack Brazil Congress

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (January 9, 2023) said that he is “extremely concerned” over reports of rioting and vandalism against government institutions in the Brazilian capital, Brasilia. Taking to his official Twitter account, Modi said that democratic traditions should be respected by all.

“Deeply concerned by reports of riots and vandalism against government institutions in Brasilia. Democratic traditions must be respected by all. We offer our full support to the Brazilian authorities,” he said in a tweet.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who defeated Bolsonaro in last year’s election, announced a federal security intervention in Brasilia until January 31 after capital security forces were initially overwhelmed by the invaders.

He blamed Bolsonaro for inciting his supporters Following a campaign of baseless allegations of possible election fraud.

Lula said at a press conference, “These barbarians, whom we can call … fanatical fascists, have done what has never been done in the history of this country.”

“All those who do this will be traced and punished,” he added.
