Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday chaired the Regional Conference on Drug Trafficking and National Security in Bengaluru. Delegates from 5 southern and 3 union territories participated in the conference. During this, 9,298 kg of drugs worth Rs 1,235 crore were burnt in different parts of the country.

Amit Shah monitored it through video conferencing. The conference also saw the signing of a deal between the National Defense University and the Government of Karnataka to set up a university in Shivamogga.

Addressing the conference, Amit Shah said that under the leadership of PM Modi, the government has adopted a policy of zero tolerance against drugs to create a drug free India.

Shah said – destroyed drugs worth 8409 crores in 75 days
The Union Home Minister said- From June 1, 2022, the Amrit Mahotsav of independence started in the country. Under which a target was set to destroy 75,000 kg of drugs in a 75-day campaign. However, we have so far destroyed 5,94,620 kg of drugs worth Rs 8,409 crore, which is many times more than the target. Of these, drugs worth Rs 3,138 crore (1,29,363 kg) have been destroyed by the NCB alone.

Drug trafficking is a national problem: Amit Shah
Amit Shah said that drug smuggling is not just a state or center but a national problem. There is a need to work at the district and state level to deal with this. There is a whole racket of drug smuggling in the country, there is a need to investigate to crack it down.

Shah informed that between 2006 and 2013, 1257 cases of drug smuggling were registered in the country, which increased by 152% to 3172 between 2014 and 2022. Whereas, between 2006 and 2013, arrests increased by 260% from 1362 to 4888.

During 2006 to 2013, 1.52 lakh kg of drugs were seized, which doubled to 3.30 lakh kg between 2014 and 2022. Drugs worth Rs 768 crore were seized during 2006 to 2013, which increased 25 times to Rs 20,000 crore between 2014 and 2022.
