Istanbul:

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that rocked Turkey and Syria topped 40,000 on Friday, as hopes of survival grew bleaker.

Officials and medics said 38,044 people in Turkey and 3,688 in Syria were killed by the February 6 earthquake, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 41,732.

Turkish rescue workers pulled a 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old woman from the rubble on Thursday, nearly 11 days after a 7.8-magnitude quake.

But Turkey has suspended rescue operations in some areas, and the government in war-torn Syria has done the same in areas under its control.

Turkey’s deaths make it the country’s deadliest natural disaster in its post-Ottoman history.
