Mangaluru: School Dakshina Kannada Preparations are on to serve egg, chikki and banana to the students of classes IX and X along with the mid-day meal.
A year ago, when the scheme was launched in the district, it was a predicament where students of classes 9 and 10 used to sit together for lunch, but only students of class VIII and below were served eggs, chikki And banana was served. However, with the extension of the scheme to all students, teachers said it is a welcome move, and from now on all children can be beneficiaries of the initiative.
Usha M, Executive Officer, Akshara Dasoha, Dakshina Kannada, said they are yet to get an official order from the government to serve eggs, chikki and banana to Class IX and X students. The earlier government order to serve eggs, chickpeas and banana during the mid-day meal to the students of classes I to VIII is valid till next week. “We expect the order to arrive this week,” he said.
Giving data on the beneficiaries, Usha said that it is estimated that a total of 32,679 students are studying in classes IX and X. There are around 1,13,887 students studying in classes I to VIII in the district who are currently beneficiaries. Plan.
In this academic year, egg, chickpea and banana are being served once a week, and will be served twice a week as per the recent state budget.

Usha said that based on the data for the current academic year, the demand for eggs in Dakshina Kannada has dropped by 75% at this time. Usha said that out of 1,13,887 children, about 85,390 students prefer eggs, which is about 75%, while the rest eat chikki and banana. Chikki is a favorite of those who do not eat eggs.
When the scheme was initially launched, around 85% children in the district consumed eggs, while 10% and 5% children opted for bananas and chickpeas, respectively. “There are some children who, even though they eat eggs, do not like to eat them every time they are served at school. As a result, the number of children eating eggs often fluctuates,” Usha said, adding that egg prices have reached Rs 7.5 per egg in some places.
