COIMBATORE: Electric vehicles (EV) sales in Coimbatore to see huge growth in 2022 as compared to last year Regional Transport Department shows.
Registration of Electric Light Motor Vehicles increased by 138% (lmv) and two-wheelers have increased by 250% as compared to 2021. While 1,336 two-wheelers were registered in the district in 2021, 4,683 were registered in 2022.
According to a representative of the EV industry, data from regional transport offices (RTO) is only an indicator as a large number of vehicles are sold without registration. Two-wheelers with a maximum speed of 25 kmph do not require registration.
The district has seven RTOs including four in Coimbatore. like the rest of the rural areas mettupalayamPollachi and Spread,
In the RTO of the city, maximum number of electric two wheelers were registered in the Central RTO in 2022. While 1,405 vehicles were registered in the central RTO, 716 were registered in the north, followed by 685 in the south and 698 in the west.
Among rural areas, Sulur saw the highest registration of EVs, followed by Pollachi and Mettupalayam. When it comes to light motor vehicles, 398 such vehicles are expected to be registered in 2022 as against 167 in 2021.
A transport department official said the number of EVs is set to increase as the industry gradually matures. The state government’s recent announcement to extend tax exemption for EVs till 2025 is expected to encourage more people to make the switch.
EV dealers in the city say that apart from two-wheelers and light motor vehicles, sales of three-wheelers are also on the rise.
Three wheelers are mostly used as goods carriers for commercial purposes. “The three wheelers are compact and hence can move easily on congested roads in commercial centers like town halls. However, the government has not yet allowed battery operated three wheelers for public transport. Private three wheeler passenger vehicles al -are less, ”said C Satyachandranowning to wagon wheels,
A representative of an EV dealer said that the lack of charging infrastructure is a challenge. “There are only four public charging stations in the district. Two wheelers do not require charging stations as they are mainly used in the city. More stations should be set up for the benefit of car users,” he said.
