Elon Musk reveals China’s interest in a cooperative international framework for the regulation of artificial intelligence

Billionaire Elon Musk said on Wednesday that he thinks China is interested in a cooperative international framework on artificial intelligence, according to talks he held a few weeks ago when he visited China. Musk made the remarks in a Twitter Space event with two US Congressmen, Democrat Ro Khanna and Republican Mike Gallagher.

“China is certainly interested in working in a cooperative international framework for AI regulation,” Musk said. He said he has advocated for artificial intelligence regulations and surveillance, including at his meetings in China.

The remarks came on the same day Musk launched his long-discussed artificial intelligence startup, XAI, after months of debating AI’s potential for “civilization destruction”.

A few weeks ago, Musk traveled to China, where his Tesla electric car company has a factory in Shanghai, and met with China’s foreign, commerce and industry ministers in Beijing. He also met the Vice Premier of China, Ding Xueliang.

After meeting with officials during his China trip, Musk said last month that the Chinese government would try to introduce artificial intelligence regulations in China.

Many governments are considering how to mitigate the dangers of the emerging technology, which has experienced a surge in investment and consumer popularity in recent months following the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Regulators globally are struggling to formulate rules governing the use of generative AI, which can create text and images, and whose impact has been compared to that of the Internet.
