In a CNBC interview on Tuesday, Musk surprisingly downplayed his claim regarding the OpenAI donation, saying: “I’m not sure of the exact number, but it’s some number on the order of $50 million.”
However, a TechCrunch investigation into the funding behind OpenAI, citing documents filed with the IRS and a state regulator, revealed that Musk may not have given the company the $100 million he always claimed.
“Indeed, while the source of most of OpenAI’s funding is unclear, the filing only includes donations of about $15 million, which can certainly be traced back to Musk,” the report said Wednesday.
Musk’s attorney did not respond to the report.
In 2016, the Musk Foundation donated $10 million to YC.org, another non-profit organization associated with Altman.
In return YC.org donated $10 million to OpenAI.
That $10 million donation is the first publicly announced cash contribution from Musk to OpenAI.
YC later gave another $16 million to OpenAI in 2017, of which at least $5 million was likely to go to Musk, according to the report.
Microsoft later invested nearly $1 billion in OpenAI.
