Legacy blue checks were supposed to expire on April 1, but Twitter boss Elon Musk moved the end date to April 20.

Twitter has reportedly ended its legacy blue checkmark, a feature it was given for free to journalists, celebrities and public officials to prevent impersonation and spam on the platform.

The legacy blue checks were supposed to expire on April 1, but Twitter owner Elon Musk moved the end date to April 20.

The new verification mark will only be available to paid users, businesses, government entities, and officials.

A verified account’s label will now read, “This account is verified because they are subscribed to Twitter Blue and have verified their phone number.”

Some users experienced “flickering” blue checkmarks on their profiles, while others lost their blue checkmarks altogether.

Twitter has removed legacy checkmarks from even the most popular figures, including Pope Francis.

After acquiring the social media giant, Musk aimed to transform the advertising-dependent platform he bought last year for $44 billion into a pay-to-play model.

In addition to monetization, Musk says the decision is a step towards promoting transparency and fairness in social media.

It remains to be seen how this move will affect Twitter’s verification process, and whether other social media platforms will follow suit.
