Ernakulam, Malappuram on yellow alert today | Kochi News – Times of India

KOCHI: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert of isolated heavy rainfall for Ernakulam and Malappuram on Thursday. Some places in the state received heavy spells of above 7cm rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, during the Onam days.
Cherthala recorded the highest rainfall of 13cm on Wednesday morning while Thycattussery got 11cm, Kayamkulam – 9cm, Mavelikkara and Karumadi – 8cm, Haripad, Vaikom, Munnar and Chalakudy received 7cm.
IMD said that there would be light rainfall in many places this week. Squally wind speed reaching 45-55kmph gusting to 65kmph is likely to prevail over southwest Bay of Bengal off south Sri Lanka coast.
Meanwhile, the state continues to reel under high temperatures with mercury crossing 3-5C above normal in many places. As the third month of monsoon ends, the season’s rainfall stands at 48% deficiency from June 1-Aug 30. In August, the total shortage was 87% from June 1-Aug 30.
Idukki recorded the largest deficiency of 63%. Kozhikode, Kottayam, Palakkad and Thrissur have more than 50% shortage. All districts have recorded above 32% deficiency.
Skymet Weather said that Kerala is likely to get further showers of varied intensity in the next few days. The reason for the rains is the persistence of a trough extending from south interior Karnataka to the Comorin region. A feeble circulation is also marked off the coast.
It said that the monsoon season has been notably lacklustre for the state and is the most rain-deficient area in the nation. However, these rainfall activities are not likely to reduce the massive deficit that Kerala is experiencing.
Across the country, August has been a poor rainfall month. Skymet said that none of the monsoon systems originating over the Bay of Bengal travelled deep up to the plains of north and west India. The seasonal surplus of 28% rainfall of northwest India as on Aug 1 has been reduced and now merely stands at 6%.
Earlier, in August 2009, an El Nino and drought year, recorded the highest shortfall of 26%, since 2001. A deficiency of more than 20% during August was observed in the country in 2001, 2005, 2009, 2015 and 2021.
