ESI Hospital gets approval to conduct autopsy. Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: Six years after the Prime Minister’s inauguration Narendra ModiGovernment Medical College and ESIC Hospital in Singanallur have been given permission to conduct the autopsy.
An order dated July 18, 2022, issued by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, states that the state government has permitted the hospital to conduct medico-legal autopsies. The government also decided to accept the proposal of Coimbatore Collector GS Sameeran, as submitted by the hospital’s dean Dr M. ravindranTo split the proposed medico-legal jurisdiction.
Till now, autopsies were conducted only at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in the district, leading to a rise in cases. ESI Hospital Will face now will share the burden CMCH,
Raveendran told TOI that the autopsy is mandatory for educational purposes and meeting the National Medical Council (NMC) norms. “The government order has classified police stations in Coimbatore city and rural areas as medico-legal jurisdiction for CMCH and ESI Hospital,” he said.
The government has identified eight police stations in the city and 16 in the district for CMCH to conduct the postmortem. The ESI hospital will handle postmortem cases from seven in the city and 19 police stations in the district, including East and South zones, Pollachi, Valparai and Karumathampatti sub-divisions.
Medical students will largely benefit from the postmortem procedures at ESI Hospital, said Raveendran, adding, “Till now, students from government and private medical colleges in Coimbatore had to attend postmortem classes at CMCH.”
Dr C Manoharan, head of forensic medicine at ESI Hospital, said the facility has six forensic specialists and eight staff. “We can handle 10 postmortem cases per day, given that we have adequate workforce and infrastructure,” he said.
