Explainer: Why Uniform Civil Code is a numbers game India News – Times of India

BJP is continuously batting uniform civil code (UCC). Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday said, “I think there are many leaders from other parties who want that the country should be united. I think many parties will support the BJP on the Uniform Civil Code. We need all parties for this.” will be supported.”
Speculation is rife that the government will introduce a bill on UCC in Parliament later this year. But the question is whether the saffron party has the numbers Rajya Sabha The passing of such a bill is still unresolved.
what do the figures say
The BJP has 91 seats in the Rajya Sabha and five nominated members belonging to it – taking its tally to 96. And, the current halfway figure is 119.
Its NDA allies in the Northeast – which include NPP in Meghalaya, NDPP in Nagaland and MNF in Mizoram – are against it. The AGP of Assam has not declared its stand yet. These parties together have four MPs in the Rajya Sabha.
Parties like the YSRCP and BJD, which are not members of the NDA but are considered friendly to the BJP, are yet to clear their stand, especially when it comes to passing bills. They have nine MPs each in the Rajya Sabha.
But
NDA insiders suggest that AIADMK TDP and BJP are likely to support it if the government introduces a bill on UCC later this year. Together, they hold five seats in the upper house of parliament.
AAP has assured “in principle” support to the UCC. If support for the idea translates into a party’s Rajya Sabha MP voting in favor of the bill, it could make a big difference.
Then there are independent nominated MPs and smaller parties like Ramdas Athawale’s Republican Party of India which could play a decisive role in another 5-10 votes.
