Ajit Kumar (25), a native of Bihar’s Begusarai, said he has been waiting for the body of his brother Sujit (23) since June 6.
“I could identify my brother by the Mahakal tattoo on his body. However, we were told to wait for the DNA results. There is no indication of when the results might be available, making it difficult for us to plan our return It happens.” said Ajit, who is staying in a rented accommodation near AIIMS.
There are many more like him from Bihar and West Bengal who are still in Bhubaneswar, pending identification of the bodies of their next of kin.
AIIMS has preserved all 81 unidentified bodies in minus 10 degree Celsius temperature for their identification. So far 78 families have given DNA samples. Seven families have filed specific claims after viewing the photographs. However, others have submitted samples to identify their missing relatives.
Most of the bodies have suffered extensive damage from the June 2 crash, making them impossible to identify.
Tripathi said the bodies were in the same condition as they were received by AIIMS on June 4, two days after the accident.
Though the AIIMS help desk is still open to allow affected families to submit their DNA samples, no new person has come in the last three days. A senior government official said they would wait for the results of the DNA tests and would not rush into disposing of the bodies.
