Famous kabuki actor found dead, parents dead: report

Ennosuke Ichikawa was found seated inside a cell and is not in critical condition.

Tokyo, Japan:

One of Japan’s most famous kabuki actors was found unconscious at home with both of his parents, who were confirmed dead, local media said on Thursday.

Ennosuke Ichikawa, 47, was found unconscious inside a closet at his Tokyo home, his agent, GG Press Agency and other local media said, citing police sources.

Jiji and public broadcaster NHK said rescue workers found his 76-year-old father, a kabuki actor, and his 75-year-old mother unconscious, and both were later confirmed dead.

Jiji informs that the police are investigating the details of the incident and what appears to be a suicide note written by Ichikawa inside the house.

A Tokyo police spokesman, who declined to be named, confirmed that a man and woman in their seventies were presumed dead, but did not provide further details.

Jiji said that Ichikawa was found sitting in a cell and his condition was not serious.

Ichikawa made his kabuki debut in 1980 and has gone on to become one of the country’s best-known artists. He also branched out into television shows and films while continuing to perform in traditional theatre.

According to his official website, he has performed kabuki at the London, Amsterdam and Paris Opera Houses and has been nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Dance Performance.
