Bhubaneswar: The nine-day Rath Yatra in London on Saturday concluded as a grand Bahuda Yatra for the first time.
Organized by Shree Jagannath Society UK (SJSUK) Shri Ram MandirAround 400 Jagannath devotees from Southall, UK and Europe participated in it.
Bahuda Yatra rituals began with a “Havan” by the priests and was followed by “Ratha Pratishtha” (anointing of the chariot). Thereafter, the “Chatura Murti Snan” or ritual bath of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra was performed and “Khechudi Bhog” was given to them. This was followed by the “pahandi” or procession in which the deities were carried to their chariots, which, by enthusiastic devotees, swayed and danced to the beat of cymbals and blowing conch shells, enthralling the audience.
Thereafter, the ceremonial dispatch of the “Agnya Mala” on the chariot, setting the stage for the deities to be carried to the chariot, and the “Tahiya Lagi”, where the deities were decorated in elaborate caps made of flowers, were performed.

Amidst the singing of hymns and loud chants of “Hari Bolo” and “Jai Jagannath”, devotees pulled the chariot through the streets of Southall to their home temple residence. Devotees were allowed to have darshan and were treated to delicious “chhappan bhog” prasad consisting of dishes such as “Chhena Tadiya”, “Poda Peetha” and “Khiramohan” prepared by the women members of SJSUK. One of the members, Jayshree Nanda, said, “I felt that I was shifted to Puri during the ceremony.”
A satsang was organized by artists and SJSUK members from Gitanjali Lalit Kala Akademi, London. Renowned author and columnist and Director of Nehru Centre, London, Amish Tripathi attended the ceremony. He also launched a book titled “Shri Jagannath Sanskriti Adhyayan” written by Ajay Kumar Mishra, retired Associate Professor of Oriya Literature who visited the UK from Cuttack.
Later, the “Adharapana Niti” and the “Niladri Bije Niti” were performed as the deities were carried by their chariots to the temple in “Pahandi”.
