A fire broke out at the Ghazipur landfill site in east Delhi on Monday but was brought under control within hours, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said.

According to a DFS official, a call about the fire was received around 1.30 pm, following which 14 fire engines were immediately rushed to the spot.

Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials said the fire broke out due to reaction of high temperature with methane gas generated at the site and spread rapidly due to strong winds.

The civic body said that the authorities responded immediately and around 10 excavators as well as 4-5 bulldozers were pressed into service to douse the fire at the site.

“Around 60-70% of the fire was doused immediately and was not allowed to spread to the landfill site,” the civic body said in a statement.

It added that 10-12 small flames were confined to a small area and continue to burn, but will be extinguished by nightfall.
